In the First Person:

Project Development Institute No. 1, founded in Leningrad in 1946, was for a long time the leading organization in the country in terms of construction design. The scale of its projects speaks for itself: more than 4,000 facilities in 300 cities of the USSR and more than thirty foreign countries. In the difficult years after the war, the staff of the Institute helped restore industry and then actively worked on its renovation and innovation, as well as on the development of residential and public construction. The Institute has always responded to the challenges of the time, developing progressive new construction elements, setting up experimental sites to introduce new manufacturing practices, and offering brilliant solutions for complex projects, where many of the problems were formulated for the first time in the practice of construction.

The Institute’s credits include participation in designing and building such industrial giants as the Izhorsky and Baltiysky plants, Electrosila and Admiralty Shipyards, Atommash Plant in Volgodonsk and a Ship-building plant in Riga. The main know-how of the Institute has always been its comprehensive approach to design, the high qualifications and experience of its staff, and its use of advanced design methods and development of new ones.

Today, the revamped Project Development Institute No. 1 is embracing all modern information technologies. Developing our potential and using our accumulated experience, we are currently working on introducing a state-of-the-art approach to design documentation management – the BIM model (building information modeling). The essence of the method is to develop a unified graphical informational 3D model of the building, which increases the effectiveness of the project and considerably cuts down the time needed to complete the construction process. All the designers are working on the model sharing the same space, which facilitates coordination between the parts of the project and makes it possible to avoid mistakes that appear in the process of construction and maintenance of the building.

The important advantage of the BIM model for the customer is its absolute transparency: as soon as at the design stage, the entire project is visible along with all applicable business processes and future maintenance expenses. The information components of the model make it possible to select and calculate the cost of construction materials, equipment and logistics and guarantees quality control at the construction stage, along with optimal management of project economy at the stage of operation. At the design stage alone, the BIM model makes it possible to cut construction costs by 10-12%.

Today, Project Development Institute No. 1 is working on the following design directions: industrial construction, comprehensive construction of public and residential buildings, athletic arenas, and thermal-energy sector facilities.

Project Development Institute No. 1 has traditionally placed emphasis on human capital, respect for the older generation, and its ability to educate and develop world-class professionals. Today, we are in a unique situation, when the old team with its gigantic practical expertise is working to transfer their knowledge to talented youth who are in good command of state-of-the-art technologies. This allows the Institute to solve very difficult problems in all spheres of project development, using innovative methods. This is the approach that has always distinguished Project Development Institute No. 1 throughout the seventy years of its history.
