BUSINESS CLUB PI-No.1 ANNOUNCES: “THE COURTYARD OF THE SPbSU PHILOLOGICAL FACULTY - A MODERN SCULPTURE UNDER THE OPEN SKY”
28 June 2019
On June 21, members of the Business Club of the Project Institute No. 1 made a field trip to one of the most interesting corners of Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg - the courtyard of the Faculty of Philology of St. Petersburg State University. This unusual courtyard is often called the park of modern sculpture under the open sky.
The initiator of the creation of the open-air sculpture park was S. Bogdanov, the dean of the Faculty of Philology, and its official opening took place in 2002, when A. Avetisyan’s sculpture “Reflections on the Little Prince” was installed in the courtyard of the SPbU Philology Faculty. But the first exhibits appeared here before that time. So, in 2000 a bronze bas-relief of Ksenia the Blessed Petersburg work of sculptor V. Chebotar was installed on a pink granite slab. And in 2001, a memorial plaque to the great sculptor Domenico Trezzini, made by George Postnikov, appeared here.
During the tour it was noted that almost all the sculptures located here, as well as small architectural forms, were made in a peculiar author's manner and require reflection and guesswork, which causes lively discussions among the visitors of the Courtyard. In addition, there are monuments to famous poets, one way or another connected with the activities of the Faculty - Joseph Brodsky, Osip Mandelstam and his wife Nadezhda, Anna Akhmatova, Alexander Blok and the outstanding Spanish poet Miguel Hernandez.
The courtyard of the philological faculty of St. Petersburg State University is replenished with new sculptures and it has become a tradition that during the celebration of Philologist and Orientalist Day, celebrated at the end of May, newly created monuments are appearing in the Park, and according to popular belief, brings good luck to students and teachers.
